Welcome from our founding President
In early 2013, my wife and I wondered why there was no alumni chapter in the area. After all, you don't have to go far to see a PSU bumper sticker, t-shirt, or baseball cap. There were other like-minded Penn Staters like Treasurer Dr. Kevin Sugalski and Secretary Amy Picklo asking the same question! Fortunately, we were able to come together to form this chapter!
In my circle of friends, I am the biggest PSU fanatic. I always chuckle when my non-PSU friends say things like, “What’s up with all you Penn Staters? You’re all a bunch of nuts!” Unless you've been to Happy Valley and experienced all Penn State has to offer, it’s hard to describe. For me, it’s not just about athletics and tailgates. I owe a lot in my life to Penn State. I received a great education which has led to a successful career. I met my wife at Penn State, and now we’re raising two future Penn Staters! I’m excited to find other people in the region who are just as passionate about Penn State as I am. Most of all, I'm excited to give back!
The process to start a chapter is purposely hard. The Penn State Alumni Association wants to ensure new chapters are sustainable. When we first started the chapter, the learning curve was quite steep, and we’re still learning more with each chapter event. Our Board of Directors put in many long hours in the early months of 2014 in order to get the chapter off the ground. As much as we wanted to jump right into tailgates and other fun events, there was a lot of groundwork to be done like writing chapter bylaws, building this website, planning events and marketing the chapter. However, we're still not an official chapter. We hope to be chartered in early 2015. Thank you to all the folks that purchased initial memberships. Your support is vital to proving to PSAA that this chapter has a strong foundation and will thrive for years to come.
The Board of Directors and I have some lofty goals for the chapter, and I hope you join and help us achieve them. I’d like for the chapter to eventually endow a full scholarship at Penn State. It will take us a while to get there so in the meantime, I’d like the chapter to help Laurel Highlands’ PSU students with the cost of books. I want the chapter to support THON as well as other charitable organizations in the Laurel Highlands region. I want the chapter to host fun and interesting events. Lastly, I want the chapter to be a force for good in the region and show everyone just who WE ARE!
